A canonical URL is the preferred URL of a given webpage or post.

If you have several similar versions of the same content, you pick one “canonical” version and point the search engines at that. This solves a duplicate content problem where search engines don’t know which version of the content to show.

What happens on Worpdress is when you create a page, WordPress will automatically assign that page a URL. As you add categories, tags, and other modifers, WordPress enables your viewers to find that same webpage through the various layers of your website. Each of these layers have have their own URL.

Which one should the search engines find?

That’s exactly what we’re going to cover in this video today so stay tuned. We’ll walk you through:

1. The definition of a canonical URL
2. How to set up a canonical URL
3. How to use a canonical URL
4. Why you need a canonical URL
